In the 1830's an Irishman (Michael Wilding) goes to Australia where he meets a lady (Ingrid Bergman) who is now married to an ex-convict (Joseph Cotten). They knew when they were younger but she is now an alcoholic with what turns out to be a dark secret that upsets the lives of all three of them and the housekeeper further muddies the water. This has the feel of a Victorian melodrama and is quite different to much of Alfred Hitchcock's other work. There are good performances from the three main leads though Ingrid Bergman's Irish accent is less than convincing in places but her portrayal of a woman coming apart from various pressures more than makes up for this.
