An alien in the form of a woman drives around Scotland picking up unattached men and sending them into a mysterious black liquid. Apart from Scarlett Johansson, the rest of the cast were not recognised actors. The film is a strange mix of sci-fi and horror with an unfathomable and unexplained plot, filmed against a backdrop of everyday life in Scotland. There is also a subtle commentary on what it is to be human in modern society. Jonathan Glazer has delivered a film has resonances with 2001, and like that film it will not appeal to everyone. Scarlett Johansson's performance is good, albeit played very dead pan, which is effective though.
