During World War 2 a group of young men are conscripted into the British infantry. They start as hopeless raw recruits and are moulded into a group of fighting soldiers, ending up in North Africa. On one level this can be seen as a piece of propaganda, and on another level Carol Reed has delivered a good piece of cinema looking at how men change as a result of being drafted into the army during a war.
