Richard Linklater is a director who is known for his indie films and his character driven films. His first film was It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books that took 2 years to film and was about himself. His first feature film was Slacker which follows random characters and has no plot as such and was a reflection of Gen Z teenagers. Before Sunrise follows the chance meeting of two people who then spend time together. There is no story as such but it is all about the conversation. SubUrbia is a reflection on a group of people who are aimless. Tape is a film that runs in real time and is a three handed film in one motel room but has good performances from all three actors.
School Of Rock is a conventional Hollywood comedy. Before Sunset is the follow up to Before Sunrise and much of the script was written by the same two actors from the original film. Bernie was more of a black comedy in a semi documentary style. Before Midnight is the third in the before series of films. Boyhood is an unusual film in that it is a coming of age drama where the lead boys actually ages and so it was filmed over a 12 year period. Last Flag Flying is a slight change in feel as he looks at mature people rather than youngsters who were central in many of his earlier films.
