Career / Biography

Ed Harris has given some very good performances in some good films, particularly his roles in both Apollo 13 and The Truman Show. His initial career was on the stage and then in telelvision before appearing in some George A Romero films. His break through role was as John Glenn in The Right Stuff about early space flight. This was followed by the political thriller Under Fire and the war time romance Swing Shift. Whilst filming Places In The Heart he met his future wife Amy Madigan and was a film that allowed him to play a darker character. Sweet Dreams was a biopic of singer Patsy Cline. The Abyss was his first science fiction film and his first film with a full leading role that brings the personal to an effects laden film. In The Firm he is the FBI but he pushed Tom Cruise into the position of fighting both sides It was his performance in Apollo 13 that won him a Best supporting Actor Oscar nomination. In many ways his the best performance in the film. The Rock was another commercial success. He then starred in the popular Truman Show as the puppet master in the ultimate reality television show and won him a second Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. He both starred and directed Pollock and won a Best Actor Oscar nomination. In a Beautiful Mind Ed Harris is a delusion in Nash's mind, which is an unusual role. His fourth Oscar nomination was for his performance in The Hours. Appaloosa was a western and so a different role for him. With Gravity he returned to science fiction and in his 70's appeared in Top Gun: Maverick.
