Career / Biography

Laurence Harvey was a Lithuanian born British actor who worked in films in Britain and Hollywood. He was Oscar nomminated for his performance in Room At The Top. He was a handsom actor but was also one the angry young men of the British New Wave. His first film was House of Darkness an early horror film. The Good Die Young was a British noir style film. He took a more leading role in the bigger budget King Richard And The Crusaders. however his first big success was Room At The Top. This was one of the first of the British social relaism films and was a significant British film. He was nominated from the Best Actor Oscar. Express Bongo was a light British musical. The Alamo was a big film that John Waye starred and directed. That film brought him to the notice of Hollywood and led to MGM's Butterfield 8 with Elizabeth Taylor. The Long and The Short and The Tall was a change of genre into a war film. The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm was a light fantasy and the role was not his usual cad / villan characters. One of his best performances was in the cold war thriller The Manchurian Candidate. This was another film where the woman he played opposite got Oscar nominations. Of Human Bondage (1964) was the British remake of the of the earlier film version of the W. Somerset Maugham play. The Outrage is a curious film being a western version of Rashamon. Darling is an examination of the darker side of the 1960's. A Dandy In Aspic was a spy thriller. Night Watch was his final film again with Elizabeth Taylor.
