Hattie McDaniel appeared in over 90 films between 1932 and 1949. As an African-American she suffered from racism and sterotyping in the film industry. Many of her roles were small supporting roles oftern as the maid and many were uncredited before her role in Gone With The Wind. She was the first African-American to win an Oscar but had to sit at a segregated table at the award ceremony. As well as her acting she was a singer, comedian and activist for black rights.
