Comment/Synopsis
In 1870's New York an engaged man (John Boles) starts an affiar with a married woman (Irene Dunne) who is related to his fiance (Julie haydon). The affair continues even after he is married. The film is based on the Edith Wharton novel and explores relationships and social conventions of the period. It does so in a polite way as it was made under the constraints of the Hays Code. John Boles is good as the man ttorn between the woman he marries because he is supposed to and the woman he loves. Irene Dunne inject some life and passion into the stuffy social circle the film is set in, whilst Julie Haydon is the demure and innocent wife.
