Not even Michelle Pfeiffer or Winona Ryder can inject any life into this period drama set in late 19th century New York. The plot revolves around a love triangle between Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder, however for a Martin Scorsese film this is disappointing. There is a narrator telling the story and the characters give descriptions of what they are doing rather than there being any dialogue and character development. The film is based on the novel by Edith Wharton. The musical score was by Elmer Bernstein.
