Career / Biography
Martin Scorsese is a successful director and producer. He had an 8 year relationship for actress Illeana Douglas. In several of his early films he worked with the actor Harvey Keitel and with Robert DeNiro in many of his later films. He wsa brought up in the Italian community in New York. He then studied film making. One of his early films was Who's That Knocking at My Door with the film debut of Harvy Keitel. After this he moved to Los Angeles and worked with director Roger Corman including Boxcar Bertha. Mean Streets was written by Martin Scorsese and reflected some of early life experiences. This was the film that made his name as a director and was a commercial success. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore was a comedy that was a buddy picture between a mother and son and won Ellen Burstyn an Oscar.
On the back of the success of this he had full control over Taxi Driver of a war verteran trying to adapt to life and has an almost sense of film noir. It was nominated for Best Picture Oscar. New York, New York was his homage to older musicals but also reflecting a troubled relationship between the two main characters. Raging Bull was Robert DeNiro's passion film. It was filmed in black and White shows the passin of boxing in the style and way it was filmed an gained him a Best Director Oscar nomination. The Last Temptation Of Christ was a controversial film based on a novel rather than te Bible. Goodfellas was a great gangster film, again featuring Robert DeNiro, and features a commentary being said to the audience tat describes the flow of the narrative.
He was nominated for the Best Director Oscar and the film for Best Picture. Capr Fear was a remake of the earlier versin of the novel and is a stongly played revenge thriller. Age Of Innocence was very different being a period drama and is about the social constraints of the period. Casino is about how gangsters controlled casino's and then lost that control to corporant business. Gangs Of New York was a period gangster film that he had been wanting to make for years. This was a big budget and made on an epic scale being filmed at Cinecittà Studios in Italy. It is visually very impressive though the story does not quite back up the good production value. The Aviator was a bippic of Howard Hughes. In The Departed the police and the gangsters each place a mole on the other side. The film finally won him the Best Director Oscar. Shutter Island is a thriller / horror in which things are really not waht they seem and has a really good twist at the end. The Wolf of Wall Street was his modern take on gangster having moved into banking and financial services. He again breaks the fourth wall as Leonardo DeCaprio talks to the audience. In The Irishman he explores the link between gangsters and politics.
