An alcoholic lawyer gets a gangster off a murder charge, but things get complicated when the wilful and free thinking daughter of the lawyer dumps her boyfriend and starts an affair with the gangster. Norma Shearer gives one of her best performances as the woman smitten by the wrong sort of man and realising too late what she has got her self into. This is definitely a pre-code film with Norma Shearer oozing sexuality as she falls for Clark Gable in the film that brought him to the public attention. Lionel Barrymore won the best actor Oscar largely for his performance in the final court room scene.
