A tramp who celebrates not working and being homeless, living in Central Park and is king of the tramps, rescues a woman about to commit suicide. She looses her memory, they fall in love and he leaves his lifestyle and gets a job to pay for her flat, little knowing she is the girlfriend of his friend the mayor. This is a curious musical film that has a very limited plot that mixes romance, social comment and some left wing ideas. The music was by Richard Rodgers and the lyrics by Lorenz Hart which includes songs and also the sung sections of the dialogue. even for a depression film it gives an over idealised view of homelessness and unemployment. As well as Al Jolson singing, it features the comics harry langdon and CHester Conklin who were better known for their silent films. Madge Evans has a small part appearing in a tight fitting evening dress. Director Lewis Milestone uses some creative camera work in places as he moves the camera during shot, but there are also some poor back-projection scenes. This was not a box office success.
