A publicity agent is accused of murdering a woman who he had taken from a diner and turned into a star. However the investigating policeman seems overly keen on finding him guilty. In order to prove his innocence he has to work with the dead woman's sister. This is a film-noir style film that starts in a series of flash backs and exposes the seedy side of the police. Victor Mature is good in the lead as the man fighting the corrupt policeman and there are good performances from Betty Grable as the sister and Carole Landis as the murdered woman. It is the performance from Laird Cregar as the creepy policeman thta sets the tone and style of the film.
