A young woman (Ann Harding) wins the European lottery and the money causes her to break up with her boyfriend. At the same time she meets and marries a suave stranger (Basil Rathbone) against the advice of her friends. However it soon transpires that her new husband is not what he seems. The film gets better in the second half, as he moves her to a remote cottage, isolates her and becomes more mentally unstable. The films benefits from being based on an Agatha Christie play and has good performances from both Basil Rathbone and Ann Harding. The film is based on the Agatha Christie novel Philomel Cottage.
