An academic teacher (Jeremy Irons) stops a young woman from jumping off a bridge. She disappears but leaves him a coat and a book. As he reads the book to journeys to Lisbon to fnd the writer and his story, he goes on a voyage of discovery into both the past and the present. This is a good study of relationships against a background of political revolution. Jeremy Irons gives a good performance in the lead role and is well supported by a good cast in a well written script.
