In a future world that has flooded, a man with gills and webbed feet (Kevin Costner) helps a woman (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her daughter in their search for dry land. They are aided by the map tattooed on the young girls back whilst being chased by assorted pirates led by Dennis Hopper. Although this film is visually impressive in places, particularly the set piece action scenes, the plot is weak and full of holes. although set in a strange dystopian future in some ways it playsn out a bit like a western. The released version is over 2 hours long although the original directors edit was over 3 hours. The highlight of the film is the performance of Jeanne Tripplehorn. The film was a major flop at the box office.
