Rob Reiner is a director known for his uplifting and comic films, but also has made a wide variety of films. His first wife was Penny Marshall. He came from a family of comedians and started to write and appear in television series. His break came in the sit com All In The Family. His first film as a director was the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. The was mainly improvised and he also acted in this film. He followed this with the romantic comedy The Sure Thing that is also part a road movie. Stand By Me was an adaptation of a Stephen King short story. The centre of the film is the interaction between the four young boys in the film.
His next film was The Princess Bride that was adventure, fantasy, romance, fairy tale, satire, comedy. It is a film that has stood the test of time for a film that is a mix of genre. In 1989 he made one of the classic romantic comedies When Harry Met Sally written by Nora Ephron. Misery was a complete change of genre with the psychological horror Misery. A Few Good Men was an adaptation of the Broadway play and is a military courtroom drama with an A list cast and wonderful dialogue. North was not a success, but his next film, American President was a success. This is another warm romantic comedy written by Aaron Sorkin who he had worked with previously. Ghosts Of Mississippi is a story of a civil rights murder, though not his best drama. He then returned to romantic comedy in The Story Of Us, although it was not successful and is about a marriage where the two people realise they have nothing left and so ends up somewhat depressing. This was followed by two more romantic comedies, Alex and Emma and Rumor Has It before the comedy road movie the Bucket List with Jack Nicholson and Moragn Freeman playing off against each other. His later films were less generally less successful.
