Comment/Synopsis
In 16th century Florence the sculptor Celllini (Frederic March) chases after a local woman (Fay Wray) and the Duchess of Florence (Constance Bennett), whilst the Duke (Frank Morgan) wants to hang Cellini for his various exploits and is also attracted to the local woman. Much of this is a bedroom farce that is somewhat constrained by the production code. Fredic March is good as the sword weilding and womanising sculptor and Frank Morgan got an Oscar nomination for his performance as the buffoon of a Duke. It is Constance Bennett who steals all the scenes she is in, being both comic and sensual. There is also good support from Fay Wray as the innocent woman thrust into the politics and almost oblivious to the advances of her two suitors. This is a witty script based on a stage play.
