A nobleman seduces a young woman leaving her pregnant an destitue. Years later he is on the jury when she is on trial for accidentally being involved in a man's death. He then sets out to make amends. It plays out against a background of the begining of socialism in Russia. It is a mix of politics and romance leaving it a strange mixed plot.
