Anna Sten was born in what is now Ukraine and started acting on the stage and then in films in Russia and then in sound films in Germany. Samuel Goldwyn brought her to America and coached her to be the next Garbo for her first film, Nana. However her first films for Goldwyn were not successful at the box office and he dropped her contract. She appeared in a few films after this but she never became a major star. Although she was a capable actress and attractive, she suffered from the hype and also a poor choice of films by Samuel Goldwyn from which her career did not really recover.
