Comment/Synopsis
Two young men (Jack Powell and David Armsrrong) are in love with the same rich girl (Jobyna Ralston) , whilst ignoring the homely girl next door (Clara Bow). When America joins World War 1, they join up and become fighter pilots. Their rivalry for the girl threatens their friendship. They start off not knowing the horros that will befall them in the war that follows. It shows the harsh reality of war and the loss of innocence. The highlight of the film are the airiel flying scenes which make up for the predictable plot. Clara Bow brings glamour and excitement to the film. There is a a small early role for Gary Cooper. The film is known for being the first winner of the the Oscar for Best Picture. It is unusual in being one of only a few films that have won best picture, without having any other nominations and is only one of two silent films to win Best Picture (The Arrtst was the other).
