Steven Spielburg is a producer and director responsible for some of the most successful films of the 1980's and 1990's. He says that he makes films about his life and childhood and are therefore very personal. He came from an orthodox Jewish family. ET is about his parents divorce, Poltergeist is about a tree that grew outside his window as a child and Empire Of The SIn also resonates with his own life. He initially started directing television series for universal and then mdae for television films, before in 1975 he made the Jaws which was the blockbuster that brought hi to the owrld's attention. He followed this up with one of the classic sci-fi films Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. For Raiders Of The Lost Ark he teamed up with George Lucas. What he manages in this and ET is that he creates memorable scenes and characters. With the Color Purple he moves from action to social consiounce. With Jurassic Park he introduced the realistic CGI dinosaurs that changed how CGI was used. With Schindlers List for which he won an Oscar showed a change in direction from big action to more social reflection, which was particularly shown in Munich. With West Side STory he had his first move into musicals. He has produced a body of work that is both critically acclaimed and also the most commercially successful director.
