Emma Thompson is one of England's best actresses, giving performances in both classic drama and thoughtful comedy. Her mother is Phyllida Law and her sister is Sophie Thompson. Her first husband was Kenneth Branagh. At Cambridge University she got into comedy and became the first female member of Footlights. She the did comedy shows with contemporaries like Fry and Lurie. She then moved into television and during the making of Fortunes of War she met Kenneth Branagh. From this she was offered films roles starting with Henry V in 1989, the first of Branagh's Shakespeare adaptations. Dead Again is a thriller where she plays a woman in two different times era's. Howard;s End was the first of several adaptations of historical novels. for which she the Best Actress Oscar. She was then nominated again for The Remains Of The Day. Sense and Sensability is one of her best film. She wrote the screen play and won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay as well as being nominated for Best Actress Oscar. She gives a good emotional performance in Love Actually and the best performance in the film. She then appeared in two of the Harry Potter films. Stranger Than Fiction is a curious adult fantasy. Last Chance Harvey is a jaded romance. She gives a good performance that raises the film since it has a thin plot. In Saving Mr Banks she plays the writer of Mary Poppins as Walt Disney tries to get her to agree to him making the film.
